Quick Guide Tahiti resorts are amongst the most glamourous in the south pacific but also are the most expensive. However, if you can afford it, staying in an over-water bungalow is the stuff of dreams. The most commonly visited islands are the main island of Tahiti and neighbouring Moorea for its scenery, and Bora Bora for its beautiful beaches and great snorkelling lagoons. All regions are well connected by regular flights from Papeete, although flights to outer islands are expensive.
Tahiti - The Main Island The main island of Tahiti offers exceptionally beautiful mountains and coastal scenery but no special beaches except for the unusual black sand beaches on the northern coast. It is an excellent island for exploring with lots of day tour opportunities but most tourists stay only a few days before heading off to other islands.
Moorea Island Neighbouring Moorea is also great for exploring and with several nice sandy beaches and lots of large beach resorts and smaller pensions. Most of these are along the north coast between the two stunning bays with the larger resorts offering over the water bungalows and artificial beaches.
Bora Bora Island The famous lagoon island of Bora Bora is definitely spectacular and has some exquisite beaches along the tiny islands surrounding the main island. Here you'll find lots of large hotels both on the main island and on the tiny uninhabited offshore islands, all offering spectacular over-the-water bungalows with steps leading down into the lagoon. Bora Bora offers plenty of commercial activities on the lagoon - for many it is too commercial to offer the true South Pacific escapism.
Other Society Islands Other islands in the Society Group include Huahine, Raiatea and Tahaa which are also good for exploring but the beaches are limited except for the offshore tiny islands where several upmarket resorts with overwater bungalows have been developed. The outer island of Maupiti is a small version of Bora Bora with gorgeous tiny islands but here tourism is limited to a few small pensions. Outer Society Islands Accommodation
Tuamotu Islands For those looking for that secluded beach in a stunning setting, head for the Tuamotu Islands, a sprawling mass of tiny coral islands about an hour flight to the east of the main island of Tahiti. The region is also known for its spectacular snorkelling and scuba diving.
