Quick Guide
Samoa resorts are found mostly on the main island of Upolu, with the highest concentration of places to stay in the capital of Apia. Traditional beach fales are popular in rural areas and can be found scattered around the islands. Neighbouring American Samoa has only a few hotels, found almost exclusively in Pago Pago town and around the airport.



Western Samoa
Upolu, Apia & Savaii
Upolu is the main island in Western Samoa, with the capital town of Apia on the north coast and the international airport at Faleolo, 35km to the east. Apia is set on a beautiful harbour where the major concentration of hotels and restaurants are found. The south coast is more rural and has some lovely traditional coastal villages and stunning tropical palm fringed beaches, some with good offshore surfing. Here there are several small boutique resorts and simple beach fales (bungalows) run by locals.

Neighbouring Savai'i lies 22km from Upolu's western tip. Ferries take about an hour and a half, and flights from Faleolo just 10 minutes. Savai'i is larger than Upolu but much of the island is wild and rugged with dormant volcanoes. The island can be toured in a day taking in the magnificent coastal sites along the way. The best beaches, surfing breaks and snorkelling are along the northeast coast where a couple of small resorts and traditional beach fales can be found.



American Samoa
American Samoa accommodation is very limited with only two large hotels and less than a dozen bed and breakfast guesthouses and lodges around the main island of Tutuila. Most of this accommodation is around Pago Pago Town and the International Airport.

American Samoa lies about 80km to the south-east of Upolu and is connected by daily flights from Apia as well as having its own international airport. Accommodation has improved in recent years with a new 100-room hotel near the airport catering to business travellers and several lovely bed and breakfast guesthouses in quiet locations. There are several traditional outer islands to the east of Tutuila with fantastic beaches, but basic guesthouse accommodation only.
