Quick Guide
Fiji resorts are amongst the most popular in the South Pacific. Accommodation ranges from the hugely popular small island resorts of the Mamanuca Islands to the large hotel chains around Nadi and the Coral Coast, to backpacker resorts along the Yasawa chain of islands and upmarket boutique resorts in the outer islands. In all, Fiji has something for everyone.

Viti Levu - The Main Island
Nadi Airport, where the majority of tourists arrive, has lots of accommodation for all budgets and is a good base for day tours, restaurants and shopping. There's plenty of small resorts along the Coral Coast about an hour drive from Nadi in the south of the island but these are not the picture postcard images of fiji. They are popular with families with the added attraction of family-style sightseeing attractions and tropical rainforest nearby. Further east, at Pacific Harbour and inland in the Highlands are some of the most traditional regions in Fiji and this is a great region for exploring, adventure activities as well as offshore diving and game fishing. Viti Levu generally offers the best value for money in Fiji although it doesn't have the idyllic beaches touted in tourist brochures.

Mamanuca & Yasawa Islands
Fiji's most popular beach resort destination is the Mamanuca Group. This collection of 30 small islands lies right off the coast from Nadi Airport making them the most accessible of the fiji resorts. The Mamanuca Islands have gorgeous palm fringed beaches and lots of water sports and day cruises around the islands. These islands are so appealing that accommodation here is often booked out months in advance, particularly during Aus / NZ school holidays. The increasingly popular Yasawa Islands lies to the north of the Mamanuca Group and are also very accessible with a daily fast catamaran (2-4 hours) but a lot less commercial. The Yasawas have fantastic sweeping beaches, turquoise lagoons and traditional fishing villages, with a couple of luxury beach resorts, lots of traditionally owned budget beach resorts and is the venue for the only small ship cruise itineraries.

The Outer Islands

The outer islands is full of secrets and charming people - this is the real fiji, unaffected by tourism. The Northern Islands, just over an hour flight from Nadi Airport, is a popular centre for sightseeing and ecotourism and is a also a huge draw for scuba diving. There are several National Parks in the region with beautiful waterfalls, hiking trails through the rainforest, nature reserves with diverse and unique bird life, and the world famous Rainbow Reef for diving and snorkelling. The Southern Islands is also an excellent centre for scuba diving (Astrolabe Reef). The larger islands of Kadavu (40-minute flight from Nadi Airport) and Beqa (assess by boat only) have dense rainforests and their coastlines are quite rugged and mostly without roads. These are excellent destinations for those who really want to escape the world, and there's world class surfing and game fishing.
