Quick Guide Cook Islands resorts are generally low key with only three of the ten classified resorts having over 50 rooms and none being taller than the surrounding coconut trees. Cook Islands has plenty of other accommodation options, including the delightful self catering beach bungalows scattered along the coast, which are usually family-run, as well as holiday homes for rent.
Rarotonga All tourists arrive on Rarotonga, the largest and most populated of the 15 islands that constitute the Cook Islands. This is where over 90% of accommodation is located. Rarotonga has fine beaches, beautiful tropical mountians, lots of sightseeing tours and great restauarants and bars. The island takes an hour to travel around and has a fantastic holiday atmosphere.
Aitutaki & Outer Islands The only other island commonly visited is Aitutaki with its laid back village atmosphere and small beach resorts on the main island. On the uninhabited islands surrounding Aitutaki Lagoon you'll find some of the best beaches and swimming lagoons in the South Pacific but unfortunately few places to stay - visiting these islands is popular as a day cruise activity, and it's also possible to visit on a day excursion from Rarotonga. Atiu Island is the third most visited island in the Cook islands and has a distinct eco-tourism appeal although there are only a couple of budget places to stay. Both islands are approximately 40 minutes flight from Rarotonga.
